Dr. Weed brings uniquely broad and interdisciplinary experience to Academic Health Associates where he is Chief Academic Officer. He is a totally blind, very brittle type I diabetic of five decades standing. He holds degrees from Yale, Princeton, and Harvard in Political Science, Public Affairs, and Genetics.

He has advised leading institutions on improving accessibility across facilities, academic programs, and data systems; contributed to the launch of the $150 million Wisconsin Institute for Discovery; designed experiential learning initiatives at six universities focused on helping health professions students better understand how individuals with chronic health conditions manage their care outside the clinical setting; and advised leaders at the National Institutes of Health on practical and policy implications in complex and controversial areas of scientific research.

Dr. Joel Berg is founder and CEO of Academic Health Associates. He was Dean at the University of Washington School of Dentistry from 2012-2017. He was President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry from 2012- 2013 and led the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry in 2018-2019. He served as commissioner on the Commission for Dental Accreditation from 2019-2023.

Dr. Berg has also had senior roles in the American and European private sector.

Currently, Dr. Berg lectures and podcasts on topics including the best infection control practices, how to manage your business online, and policies and legislation that could affect pediatric dentistry. He practices pediatric dentistry part-time and stays connected to organized dentistry as a consultant, industry researcher, author, and in philanthropic roles.
