
Dr. Stephanie Munz

Dr. Munz is the Walter H. Swartz Professor of Integrated Special Care Dentistry and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry in Ann Arbor, MI.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Munz serves in a variety of roles within the School of Dentistry, Michigan Medicine, and the greater University over her career, including the Program Director of the General Practice Residency (2014-2023), the Associate Chair of Hospital Dentistry since 2019, and as a member of the School’s Executive Committee since 2023. Dr. Munz was instrumental in developing the modern curriculum for the General Practice Residency and predoctoral special care dentistry programs, both in an effort to develop the next generation of oral health professionals to care for unique populations and collaborate with other professions across multiple settings. Dr. Munz earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2011 and her GPR Certificate from the University of Michigan Health System in 2012. She has been on faculty since 2012. She is a Fellow in the Special Care Dentistry Association.
Since serving on the Executive Board (2019-2023) for the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) and as President in 2021-2, she has gained experience in navigating programmatic development, curriculum development and integration of special care dentistry into CODA accredited predoctoral and postgraduate training programs. At the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, she contributed to designing the hospital dentistry and adult special care dentistry curriculum, including content, presentations, and evaluation mechanisms necessary for competence. She has experience with developing entrustable professional activities (EPAs). She is committed to preparing for initial and recurring accreditation site visits with these experiences.
Her clinical interests include comprehensive dental care, implant and prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with head and neck cancer, as well as dental care for individuals with cleft lip/palate, craniofacial conditions, trauma, and complex medical conditions. Dr. Munz regularly gives continuing education presentations to oral health professionals, is active in dental professional associations, and speaks regularly with students and residents on career progression. She is dedicated to developing the next generation of general practice dentists and advocating for oral health disease prevention and treatment through interprofessional collaborative practice.
In her spare time, Dr. Munz enjoys time with her family, friends, and three companion felines, tending to her house plants, restoring cars, attending Michigan football games, gardening, and spending time in nature.
