Dr. Sharon Gordon is a consultant for the project and brings expertise in health professions workforce development from her work at the national, state, and regional levels.
BIOGRAPHY
Sharon Gordon, DDS, MPH, PhD, is currently professor and head of the Foundational Sciences faculty, and the inaugural Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research at Kansas City University’s (KCU) College of Dental Medicine, a new dental school focusing on access to oral health care in a rural environment, for which she is one of the founders. In addition to her expertise in starting KCU’s new dental school, she contributed to the start up and accreditation of East Carolina University’s School of Dental Medicine and served as Dean for the University of Connecticut. Dr. Gordon has served as a CODA site visitor for over a decade and has just been nominated to serve on the Commission for Dental Accreditation. She holds a bachelors degree in biology from the University of North Texas, a DDS from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and completed a two-year GPR at Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio prior to joining the NIH in 1993 as a postdoctoral fellow. While conducting her fellowship, she earned an MPH in Epidemiology and PhD in Clinical Investigation, both from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gordon is board certified in the specialty of Dental Public Health. Prior to joining the dental school faculty at the University of Maryland where she directed curriculum innovation and management as well as graduate programs, she directed the research training, career development and educational programs at the NIDCR, NIH. She has been awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration for her work focused on interprofessional education and interprofessional practice in academic and community settings.
